I visited almost the whole Dominican Republic traveling by car, I consider myself a traveler, not a tourist. I have toured the world for work and pleasure. I have traveled and lived in Europe, Africa, and Asia. I like to know the places where I live, the people that welcome me, and their culture. After much going, I chose to live in the Dominican Republic in Sosua. I emphasize living, in the sense of living permanently, I will undoubtedly continue to travel and to visit the beautiful places of the entire DR.
The region of Barahona, for example, fascinates me particularly, and I would also put it among the most beautiful places. But I’m talking about living …
What’s so special about Sosua?
Beaches. Right in the city, Playa Sosùa, the most famous and touristic with its cafes and shops in the shade of palm trees. Quieter Playa Alicia, and Playa Imbert, perhaps the most beautiful and exclusive, overlooked by the most elegant complexes in the area.
The sea. The Atlantic Ocean, with its crystal clear waters and constant winds. The famous Trade Winds, the winds that drove Columbus to Hispaniola, and made this coast the favorite destination for windsurfers, kitesurfers, and sailors. Cabarete 10 km from Sosùa is a stage of the world championships.
The hills. The verdant heights behind the city make the climate particularly pleasant and are the occasion for refreshing panoramic walks.
These are the natural beauties, which certainly are not lacking in many other places in the Republic. But the social frame makes the real difference. Sosua, in particular, the delightful neighborhood of El Batey, was founded in 1938 by a group of Jewish refugees fleeing racial persecution. Since then, it has always been inhabited by a large and flourishing colony of European residents. In the 60s and 70s of the last century, enriched by the presence of Americans and Canadians and then of Russians. This community has created over time a social structure that offers everything that makes living there safe, pleasant, and comfortable.
In Sosùa, we have clinics at the highest level, the best international schools on the island, issuing diplomas recognized in the United States with access to all universities. Hotels and restaurants where you can taste specialties from all over the world plus of course, the delicious Dominican comedores. Lively nightlife for those who want to have fun. Two modern supermarkets where you can buy everything you need. A very efficient cultural center that organizes exhibitions and activities of all kinds for adults and children. Furthermore, our roads are well maintained, and the garbage is collected every morning. We have the international airport 10 minutes away and the capital Puerto Plata at 20.
In short, for those who want to experience the atmosphere, nature, the joy of the Caribbean without giving up the standard of living we are used to, Sosùa is the ideal place.
